Tour of the palaces

This tour was specially designed for history and palace lovers in Portugal. The Lisbon region boasts some of the most beautiful palaces, spanning different eras, featuring distinct architectural styles and unique features. On this tour, we visit the historic center of Sintra, a town with centuries of history and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The town attracts thousands of visitors every day seeking to relive a time when kings and queens sought refuge there, drawn by the milder climate and stunning mountain landscapes.

In addition to visiting the historic center of Sintra, you can choose from three of the following palaces:

  • Sintra National Palace: over 800 years of history, impressive rooms and incredible views of the Sintra Mountains;
  • Biester Palace: built in 1880, large garden with many imported species, richly decorated interiors;
  • Quinta da Regaleira: built in 1697, huge garden full of statues and nooks and the famous Initiatory Well
  • Pena Palace: built by order of D. Fernando in 1840, it stands out for its colorful exterior and superb views
  • Ajuda Palace: 19th century neoclassical building, residence of the royal family, luxurious and richly decorated interiors;
  • Queluz Palace: summer residence, the “Portuguese Versailles”, well-decorated rooms, huge garden with lakes and statues;
  • Monserrate Palace: built from 1858, Gothic, Arabic and Indian style, huge gardens with many exotic plants,
  • Fronteira Palace: discreet on the outside, but with richly decorated interiors, a huge collection of tiles and magnificent gardens;
  • Mafra Palace: huge building, construction began in 1717, a royal palace, a basilica and an impressive library

Map

The Lisbon Metropolitan Region has a population of three million people and, as the country's capital, there are many important monuments to visit.

Lisbon is an area rich in monuments, and this tour highlights nine palaces that we consider very interesting to visit. There are older palaces, some belonging to the royal family, others private, some even older, and others from the early 20th century. All are stunning in their own way.

If you're a history and architecture lover, this tour is perfect for you. You'll visit some of Portugal's most beautiful palaces.

If you want to visit Pena Palace or Quinta da Regaleira, you must make an appointment and purchase tickets in advance.

Elevated. Wear comfortable shoes, as there's a lot of walking involved. However, there's plenty of time for breaks and plenty of cafes where you can rest for a bit and recharge.
