a walk through

FÁTIMA, NAZARÉ & ÓBIDOS

On this itinerary our first destination is Sanctuary of Fátima, in the town of the same name and 130 km from Lisbon, is a place of devotion and pilgrimage, preserving the memory of the apparition of Our Lady to the three shepherd children in 1917. The neo-baroque basilica, surrounded by statues of saints, has a 65m high tower and a terrace twice the size of Saint Peter's, in Rome. Next, the destination is the preserved house of the shepherd children.

The next destination is Batalha Monastery, in the city of the same name. Built in 1386, the building is impressive. It has a beautiful church and the famous imperfect chapels, although they were not completed, are very beautiful! Next, let's get to know Praia da Nazareth, a fishing village that has grown and maintained its traditions, becoming even more famous for the giant waves of Praia do Norte. Here we'll pass through the town center and also Sítio na Nazaré, atop the mountain, where we'll have spectacular views of the city and the open sea, as well as the lighthouse where giant waves can break with greater force between October and February.

We ended our tour by visiting the village of Óbidos, located inside a medieval castle. Just over 80 km from the center of Lisbon, this beautiful and unique village has plenty of reasons to visit. Currently inhabited by fewer than 100 people, it is full of charming shops, cafes, restaurants serving traditional cuisine, and even a spectacular bookstore inside an old church, which retains the medieval appearance of its 12th-century building.

This tour lasts 9 hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with an hour for lunch. Minimum of 2 people. For groups of 4 or more, the total price is €320. Entrance fees to monuments and meals are not included. Full conditions here

Map

Nazaré is about 125km from Lisbon. On this tour we visit some of the most important points on the coast of the central-west zone: Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha.

Óbidos is a medieval town with a castle and many old churches. Nazaré is a fishing city famous worldwide for its giant waves between October and February and has an impressive view from the “site”. In Alcobaça we can visit the largest church in Portugal – the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça. In Batalha we visited the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, a UNESCO world heritage site.

For those who like castles, old churches with medieval and Gothic architecture with Manueline elements.

Nazaré is known for its giant waves that occur from October to February. Alcobaça is known for its monastery, but also for its delicious convent sweets. The Batalha monastery celebrates the victory, in 1385, of D. João I over Castile, in Aljubarrota.
